Wet vs. Dry Wipes, One Totally Cleans Up

There are an endless supply of baby wipes on the market.  From name brand product leaders like Pampers and Huggies, to store brands like Target’s Up & Up, to a wide variety of other speciality brands on the market.  It’s easy, like I did, to think “a wipe is a wipe is a wipe.”  I’m pretty sure most dads haven’t put much previous thought into wipes pre baby.

And for the most part that is true, they’re made of cloth, wet, and can do the job.  Though we’ve come to find our preferred wipe is actually a dry wipe, just like you had in the hospital when baby was born.  When Wifey suggested the idea to me, I’ll admit I thought it was a bit odd and counter productive to what we were trying to accomplish with said wipe.  But next thing I knew, there was a large box of dry wipes from Amazon sitting on the front porch.  That Amazon Prime will get you every time!

So here’s what I’ve learned since taking the dry wipe “challenge” (self imposed.) It works.  I’ll admit I did no advance research on the topic, this was solely driven by Wifey.  While I was skeptical at first, I’m now a convert.

What I’ve found:

  • No irritation - soft & gentle on skin
  • Won’t dry out - don’t need to worry about keeping case closed, or wasting wipes
  • Easy to travel with - shove them anywhere
  • Cost - slightly more expensive (see below) but with more benefits
  • Multiple other uses - cleaning, washing, they’re strong & sturdy

Quick tip: Here’s a link to the wipes we use, Medline Disposable Wipes at a cost of about $21.89 per 500 wipes.  That’s averaging $.04 per wipe.  While not bargain basement price compared to store brands, the effect dry wipes have on your baby’s bum may be worth it for you.  I’ve heard from many fellow parents who complain about rash, irritation, even stinging after prolonged use of wet wipes.  This we’ve found has eliminated all of the above.

We use the wipes in conjunction with Baby Bits Wipes Solution.  An ingenious little product by a woman out of Gainesville, Florida who runs Soaps by Denise.  You buy small little bits of soap, dissolve it in

water, and use in a spray bottle, and voila you’re wiping butts left and right.  She charges $11 for enough “Bits” for 1,000 wipes, so barely more than $.01 per wipe.  The whole process is so easy and travel friendly we’ve now passed it along to numerous of our expecting friends.  And while we try to follow registries for baby showers, Wifey has taken to include her own few “tricks of the mommy trade” and this is one of them.

Baby products do billions of dollars in business, they’re made for the mass market which is great, you can find just about anything you want or need.  Though, not everything is perfect for your baby.  We’ve experimented, tinkered, and researched to find the right products for us.  We’ve discovered a happy bum, makes a happy baby, so we can deal with this.

What are you favorite products, anything you’ve come to discover you can’t live without?  Share below and we’ll keep the favorites list growing.
