Update 8/13/14 - Make sure you catch our interview with the CEO and Co-founder of Urban Sitter Lynn Perkins on the August 13th episode of the Dads Who Diaper Podcast. You can stream it from the audio player to the right.
My wife and I are lucky in the fact that living close to family members has allowed to us get free babysitting when needed. The luxury of close family isn’t available to all parents, so it can be necessary at times, to hire a babysitter. The million dollar questions (well hopefully not that high) is what to pay the babysitter.
UrbanSitter released this infographic breaking down the geographical difference in babysitter pay.
Highlights Include
- Most Expensive city for babysitting: NYC, the average rate for one child is $15.34 per hour.
- Most Affordable city for babysitting: Denver, where the average pay starts at $10.84 an hour
- Tipping: 27% never tip the sitter.

Babysitting IS expensive, but I’ve found that you generally get what you pay for. The challenge is that babysitters are now making as much/hour (or more) than the parents they work for, especially if you consider that they are likely not withholding on their babysitting income.
That’s a good point. Finding someone you trust is the most difficult task. But like you said, you get what you pay for.
