Vito Corleone - Godfather
Vito prides himself on being careful and reasonable, but he is nevertheless willing to use violence when he thinks it is necessary. When his godson, singer Johnny Fontane, wants to get out of a contract with a bandleader, Vito offers to buy out the contract. When rebuffed, Vito threatens to kill the bandleader unless he releases Johnny for a token amount. Later, when movie mogul Jack Woltz refuses to give Johnny a role in a film, Vito has one of Woltz’s prize horses killed and the horse’s severed head placed in Woltz’s bed.
Atticus Finch - To Kill a Mockingbird
In 2003, Atticus Finch, as portrayed by Gregory Peck in the 1962 film adaptation, was voted by the American Film Institute to be the greatest hero in American film.
Gudio - Life is Beautiful
Guido sets up the concentration camp as a game for Joshua. Each of the tasks will earn them points and whoever gets to one thousand points first will win a tank. He tells him that if he cries, complains that he wants his mother, or says that he is hungry, he will lose points, while quiet boys who hide from the camp guards earn extra points. Guido uses this game to explain features of the concentration camp that would otherwise be scary for a young child.
Daniel Hillard - Mrs Doubtfire
Daniel learns that Miranda intends to hire a housekeeper to care for the children. With Miranda unwilling to let him watch the kids, Daniel surreptitiously alters her classifieds form and calls her a few times, using his voice acting skills to pose as several disturbing applicants. He then calls her posing as a pleasant and kind elderly Scottish nanny, whom he dubs “Mrs. Euphegenia Doubtfire” after seeing a newspaper headline with the words “doubt fire”. Impressed by her supposed credentials, Miranda invites “Mrs. Doubtfire” for an interview. Daniel enlists his gay brother Frank (Harvey Fierstein), a makeup artist, and Frank’s partner Jack to transform him into Mrs. Doubtfire.
Marlin - Finding Nemo
While attempting to save Nemo, Marlin meets Dory, a good-hearted and optimistic regal blue tang with short-term memory loss. Marlin and Dory encounter three sharks – Bruce, Anchor and Chum – in an old minefield. Marlin discovers the diver’s mask and notices an address written on it. When he argues with Dory and accidentally gives her a nosebleed, the blood scent causes Bruce to enter a feeding frenzy. The pair escape from Bruce but the mask falls into a trench in the deep sea.
Captain Georg Von Trapp - Sound of Music
The von Trapps spent some years in Austria after Maria and the Captain married and was offered a commission to Germany’s navy. Since Von Trapp opposed the Nazis by that time the family left Austria after the Anschluss, they went by train to Italy and then traveled to London and the United States.[4] To make the story more dramatic, Lindsey and Crouse had the family, soon after Maria’s and the Captain’s wedding, escape over the mountains to Switzerland on foot.
John McClane - Die Hard
McClane is consistently portrayed as a reluctant hero who, with little or no assistance from others, is required against his wishes to thwart the elaborate plans of a group of like-minded villains because no one else is in a position to do so. The trailer for the first Die Hard film states, “The last thing McClane wants is to be a hero, but he doesn’t have a choice.” In the second film, he is told “You’re the wrong guy in the wrong place at the wrong time”, to which he replies, “The story of my life.”
Clark Griswold - National Lampoon
With Christmas only a few weeks away, Chicago resident Clark Griswold decides it is time to get a Christmas tree. He gathers his wife Ellen, daughter Audrey and son Russ into the family station wagon and drives out to the country where he picks out a huge tree, but realizes he has not brought an axe or saw; this forces the family to pull the tree out of the frozen ground.
Jor-El - Superman
A Kryptonian, Jor-El is Superman’s biological father, the husband of Lara, and a leading scientist on the planet Krypton before its destruction. He foresaw the planet’s fate but was unable to convince his colleagues in time to save the inhabitants. Jor-El was able to save his infant son Kal-El (Superman) by sending him in a homemade spaceship towards Earth just moments before Krypton exploded. After constructing his Fortress of Solitude, Superman honored his deceased biological parents with a statue of Jor-El and Lara holding up a globe of Krypton.
